Is brake squeal normal?

Brake squeal occurs when the energy of motion is converted into heat which then dissipate throughout the brake system. This noise is often mistaken for a malfunction; however, that is rarely the case.

Brake squeal is a result of a condition called stick-slip, which causes microscopic vibrations to be broadcast by the brake rotor which acts as a speaker. Necessity dictates that the Porsche brake system be designed with large rotors and pads. Due to the larger pad surfaces, pad pressure distribution can vary when the brakes are applied at low speeds, increasing likeliness of brake squeal.

Make no mistake, the Porsche brake system has been highly engineered to provide optimum performance.

What are the different types of Porsche brakes?

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB)

The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake with yellow-coated aluminum fixed calipers is the ultimate upgrade for your Porsche. These larger cross-drilled brake discs provide considerably greater power, for exceptionally short braking distances, maximum braking safety and greater control in extreme driving situations. The ceramic brakes are also 50% lighter than gray cast iron discs, which enables better grip, greater driving and ride comfort, and more agility.

Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB)

The Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) combines a gray cast iron brake disk with a tungsten carbide coating, adding significant longevity to the system. This brake system's attractive white calipers include brake disks with high corrosion resistance, even when the vehicle is not driven for extended periods. The significant reduction in brake dust buildup results in wheels and a brake system that remain cleaner for longer.

Original Porsche Brakes

Thanks to technology transfer from our race cars, Porsche Original Brakes achieve a constant braking effect even under high loads. The internally vented brake discs - which may also be cross-drilled - provide improved wet braking and optimal cooling. The brake calipers, whether in anodized black 4-piston or red 6-piston aluminum variants, feature an enclosed monobloc design providing high rigidity and pressure point responsiveness, low weight and tight pedal travel.
